Holiday Season and Happy New Year!

Posted on December 31, 2019 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments

Christmas holidays are almost over and we are fast approaching a new year, actually a new decade! As we reflect on a busy and successful show season that lead us to Art Market in Calgary, Signature Shows in Edmonton and Saskatoon as well as Circle Craft and Granville Island in Vancouver these past months, we want to give thanks to all of our customers. We truly couldn’t do it without you!!!

At our shows, we were lucky to reconnect with many loyal customers we have known for years. We also met some amazing new customers who love the quality and craftsmanship of our leather purses and bags.

We also wanted to give a special thank you to everybody who bought one of our heart purses. With your help we were able to raise $500 this year for World Vision Canada. This money will be used for New Moms and Baby Care, Nutritious School Meals, School Essentials and for the Clean Water Fund.

As we wrap up this busy time of the year we are looking forward to some downtime in January to recuperate and to gather ideas and inspirations for new designs.

Market Season has arrived!

Posted on June 28, 2019 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments

With summer, market season has arrived! After an inspiring time in Europe, I am excited to connect with my customers in beautiful outdoor settings at various markets both on and off Vancouver Island. I love being outdoors, surrounded by nature and happy faces of festival attendees and musicians playing in the background. What could be better?

Here is a list of markets I will be at this summer:

July 10 - 18,  Granville Island Public Market, Vancouver
July 19 - 21, Harrison Festival, Harrison Hot Springs
Aug 2 - 5, Filberg Festival, Comox

Gabriola Farmers Market, Gabriola - various dates to be announced
Cedar Farmers Market, Cedar - various dates to be announced

Last week, I kicked off market-season at the Cedar Farmers’ Market. The market is at a new location in Cedar, BC (just South of Nanaimo) at Woodbank School, 1984 Woobank Road. It runs Sundays from 10am – 2pm, May through October and has a wonderful vibe.

Happy customer at last week's market in Cedar.

Celebrate Canada with us at the Ship Point Market in Victoria this coming weekend! We’ll be there from June 28th until July 1.

Ship Point Market- Victoria, BC

The Filberg Festival in Comox is my absolute favourite outdoor festival.  This year will be my 23rd year in a row in attendance.  Set amongst the majestic trees and gardens of the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park in Comox, on the east coast of Vancouver Island, the Filberg Festival is truly a spectacular event!

Thanks for reading, and make sure to say hi if you are coming to any of the above markets! I would love to see you, old customers and new!

Anita has been designing leather for over 22 years. She and Brian have deliberately kept Indian Summer Leather Design to an “artisan’s scale” in order to be involved in the entire process from creative design to placing her products into the hands of the women and men who will ultimately love her bags. Spring trip to Europe

Posted on June 11, 2019 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments

It has been an exciting couple of weeks! We have been travelling in Europe and one of the places we have visited was Paris. One of the highlights was a show at the Moulin Rouge.

During a different adventure, Brian and I went on a boat and bike trip through the Netherlands with some friends of ours.

Have you been to Belgium? Bruge, a medieval city, is an amazing itinerary. History and culture are plentiful in this Belgian city!

It's been a truly amazing trip so far and we are feeling inspired by all the new sights, history and culture!

When we get back we'll dive right into our busy summer season. We'll keep you posted with a list of upcoming summer 2019 shows and events!

The Magic of Indian Summer Leather Design

Posted on May 01, 2019 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments

Spring is in full bloom and I have been on the road for a couple of weeks for our Spring Shows. It’s been incredible connecting with so many amazing customers! Thanks to everybody who came by our booth and said hi! As always, we are very grateful to our loyal customers. Many return year after year to purchase a new bag or purse. Seeing so many happy customers wearing one of our pieces always puts a big smile on our faces.

Because I see how happy customers are when they leave with their new purchase I thought it would be nice to write about the magic that goes into making these designer bags.

I have always loved working with leather. As a little girl I would collect scraps of leather and make small change purses. My European background in fashion design and my thorough education, knowledge and experience in design, pattern making, cutting and sowing formed the foundation for me to start Indian summer Leather Design in 1995.

My inspiration comes from the things I see, experiences in nature, from my travels and from art. I live on beautiful Gabriola Island and am inspired daily by walking the trails. I love beach combing looking for unique stones that I use for leather bags to give them that unique West Coast touch.

My bags are all handmade with love and attention to detail. I believe that everyday necessities don’t have to be boring. My bags come in a brilliant array of colours and innovative designs. They're made with your active lifestyle and impeccable taste in mind. I love creating purses that are unique in design, well made and functional.

The lady that wears my piece will stand out and look beautiful.
I am looking forward to bringing my magic to the Signatures Butterdome show in Edmonton this weekend before we head home to our beautiful West Coast.

Granville Island

Posted on February 22, 2019 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments

February has been a busy month at Indian Summer Leather Design. After Brian and I returned from our trip to Thailand we dove right into work. Every two years I have to go through a jury process in order to be accepted into the Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver.

I worked hard on my jury pieces that would showcase the craftsmanship, quality and creativity of my work. In addition to displaying my work, I had to also provide an artist statement, a work process description, as well as a portfolio of my work. Only hand-crafted products of high quality are admitted to be sold in the Granville Island Market as well as most of the other shows that I attend.

After a few nerve-wrecking days of not knowing whether we got accepted, or not, we found out that YES, we got in!

This year marks my 25th consecutive year for being in the Granville Island Market. I started my business in 1995 and got accepted into the Market with my first 4 designs that I finished in time for the jury. That was the beginning of my successful bag making business "Indian Summer Leather Design”.

We are excited about being part of the Granville Island community of artists once again, and to bring my designer leather bags to Granville Island Market visitors from all over the world!

Backpacks on the Rise

Posted on November 30, 2018 by Anita Jackel | 0 comments
Christmas season is in full swing. Sparkling lights and Christmas decorations can be seen everywhere and you can just feel the excitement in the air! For us, the season brings with it a lot of traveling. So far, we have been to Circle Craft in Vancouver and to Signature Christmas Shows in Winnipeg and Edmonton as well as to Art Market in Calgary. It’s been an amazing journey and we truly love to connect with our customers (yes, YOU) in person! The shows present a fabulous opportunity to experience our products first hand. You can see the variety of designs, touch and smell the leather and try on different styles to see what suits you best.

 customer wearing backpack

This year, we have noticed a new trend: Backpacks are gaining in popularity!

This new trend has been observed by the fashion industry and is backed up by research as well. According to Forbes magazine sales of backpacks to women are up by 15%. This is consistent with the trend in fashion towards outdoor, technical products that focus on features, functionality, materials and an active look.

What’s interesting is that this trend seems to extend to men as well. In a recent article by Wall Street Journal it was noted that executives are ditching their briefcases for backpacks. Backpacks are gaining ground. The author attributes this trend to the fact that backpacks are now available in finely crafted designs in sumptuous leather. Because there are more upscale designs available, the backpack is now boardroom worthy.

From a consumer’s perspective, a backpack is suited very well for today’s multi-tasking needs. You can conveniently store your stuff while leaving your hands free.

We are thrilled that backpacks are finally getting the recognition they deserve. We have always been proud of our line of backpacks. You can see all of our available designs on our product page. Here is a selection:

The Egg Bag

Available in solid colours or two tone at no extra charge. Durable grey polly/cotton lining with inside pocket. The front flap fold up and can be secured in place to hide your zipper for security from pick pockets.

Turtle Backpack

Wander wherever your heart leads you with this classic backpack. Designed with ergonomics in mind, the Turtle Backpack hugs the body for ultimate comfort. Inherently practical but smooth and sleek, this two-toned bag looks great with a range of styles—from sporty to sophisticated.

With three zippered openings on the back of the bag: a main 11” opening and two 7” pockets. Small handle makes it easy to hold the bag while shopping.

Triangle Fold Backpack

This light and versatile bag is perfect for women on the go. An innovative and practical design from our origami line, which never ceases to amaze!

As a backpack, the triangle fold is compact and secure, with all of the zippers covered for safety. To turn it into a shoulder bag, simply zip the straps together and use the hooks to secure them on one side of the bag. Fold both flaps to the back or reverse them for completely different looks. Voila!

The front flap comes in solid black leather and is also available with our favourite accents: coloured piano keys or our Siena underlay. The body of the bag is available in solid colours or two-toned.

This bag has a total of three compartments with two signature stone closures for security. Made with silver-coloured metal zippers. Fully lined with durable grey cotton fabric.

All backpacks have in common that they come packed with practical features from inside pockets, compartments, metal zippers and lining to adjustable straps. They are available in a range of colours and styles – from sporty to sophisticated. Check them out on this website and get yours!

Backpacks are made on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada, in soft genuine cow leather with a deer tan finish with signature Indian Summer Leather Design rock closures and heat-embossed logo.

Fall & Winter Market Season

Posted on September 13, 2018 by Anita Jackel-Deggan | 0 comments

With the arrival of rain and with more in the forecast for next week, it’s a pretty good indicator that fall is knocking at our door. It smells so wonderful after the rain, and our Island (and province) really need it after our summer of wildfires. Although we will soon be saying goodbye – officially – to summer, I’m excited to share with you the upcoming FALL & WINTER MARKETS that we will be attending! From now until December, you can find Indian Summer Leather Design at the following locations, both on and off Vancouver Island:

With Christmas coming sooner than we think, attending a local craft market or show is a great way to kick start your Christmas shopping. The Gabriola Island Thanksgiving Studio Tour is one of my favourites, as we are always excited to welcome people to our studio to see where the magic of leather-making happens! If you haven’t been on the tour, it’s always a great excuse to explore Gabriola for a day or two as well.

Not able to attend a market or a show? Not to worry. As usual, all of our products are available on our website or via Shopify on my Facebook page. If you have any questions about a product, or a colour, or would like to create a custom order, I’d be happy to chat. You can always email me at anita@indiansummerleather.com

Thanks for reading, and make sure to say hi if you are coming to any of the above markets or shows!
